Chapter 31

“I called Oliver, too. Do you know what he said to me?”

Dane shook his head.

“He said that I sounded great. That he was happy I was back to normal. That he hoped you didn’t take advantage of me while you were here. He said he was worried about that. I asked him why he couldn’t help me out if he thought you might be a problem. He said he was busy.”

Dane nodded. “He’s got a real job. You know me. I’m just a drone, another cog in the machine. They probably would have missed him.”

“Dane…do you believe any job is more important than me?”

Dane shook his head slowly.

“But his question made me a little sad, too. Because I knew he only thought that because of the things I told him.”

“The truth?” Dane felt numb now.

“I remember being very scared for you. I’m a little scared about what will happen if you leave now.”
