Chapter 33

But this was a Tuesday night. And Dane never looked this nervous around him. Not anymore.

“Is the gift for me?” Guy asked.

“It is. If you want it.”

“Who doesn’t want a present?” Guy settled in the chair beside him and reached for the box. Dane watched with shy eyes and Guy tore apart the paper and lifted the lid. He caught his breath when he saw what was nestled inside on a bed of cotton. “Is this what I think it is?”

Dane nodded. “It is. One year sober.”

Guy lifted the poker chip out of the box and spun it through his fingers. “And you’re giving it to me?”

“Yeah. I…well, I want you to have it. As a reminder. And a promise.”

Guy looked up, searching Dane’s face. “A promise?”

“That I’ll make it another year. And that I’m going to make some changes in my life. Changes that, I hope, will include you.”
