The second time he had called, a week later, his mother had answered the phone. “Mama? It’s me, Ja—”

“I just called again, right before the party started. I didn’t tell anybody. I feel stupid for doing it. I know you both told me not to,” Jamey said, looking down at his hands.

“What happened this time?” Henry asked, squeezing him close.

“Casey answered the phone and I managed to tell him I loved him and Mattie and I missed them, then Daddy grabbed the phone.”

“What did he say?”

“Never call here again. I just stood there, saying, Hello? Hello? Daddy? to the dial tone,” Jamey said and started crying.

Henry pulled Jamey into a hug and held him, stroking his hair “C’mon, let’s go upstairs,” he whispered.
