“We need to go, now!” He tried pulling out his hand again, pain making him grind his teeth. “Or you go.” He stopped and looked at them. “Yes, it’s our best chance. You go.” He nodded, trying to convince himself he was okay with sacrificing himself. “Sandy show them…” He took a deep breath and tried to calm his racing heart. “Show them the weird place you found. If he comes here now, he’ll be distracted with me and you can get the women out in time if they’re there.”

No one moved. No one spoke.

“Are you insane?” Sandy glared at him. “You’re giving up? Just like that. Oh no, he has an alarm on the circle. Run! Save yourselves!” He came closer and his hands swished through the air in more and more agitated gestures. “Hero complex much?”

“I didn’t mean—”

“No, maybe you didn’t. But, if you die, I die, and I’m not willing to die for this fucker. I’ve died once by the hands of a wizard, I won’t do it a second time.”
