Chapter 15

“I think so, Mom,” Ian said, a worried look on his face.

“Then you better tell us all about this,” Raferty said, reaching over and touching his son’s arm.

“I’m not sure exactly what it is,” Ian said, “but it seems to find me no matter what.”

Susanna’s hand was now upon him as well. To outsiders, it might look like Raftery and Susanna were merely trying to comfort their son, but Ian knew that it was more than that. His parents were still trying to read him, and he was glad for that. If anyone could figure this out, it was them.

“Have you seen it?” Susanna asked.

“Yes,” Ian said. “It’s powerful, and I think it’s getting stronger. The last time it appeared, it shook the train I was on. Before that, it just crackled in the air.”

“It’s definitely powerful,” Susanna said. “I just can’t quite get a feeling for what it is.”

“Me either,” Raferty said. “There’s a familiarity to it though.”
