A few minutes later, they walked out the side door and into the land that made up their property. Although the land had at one time been a working farm, several generations ago their ancestors had decided to pursue other careers and plant some trees, in essence, making the place an arboretum. Fifty years ago, Raferty’s father had poured concrete over the dirt path that led from the road to the house, giving the land a more formal driveway. Susanna and Raferty only grew a few vegetables in spots, and made sure that the property looked nice. Most of the land was now covered with large trees, and this time of year it was beautiful in a way that reminded them, and the townspeople who came to watch their circle every year, of Halloween, Samhain, or whatever an individual called it.
