I dared raise my eyes, and caught Selby smirking. Anger washed through me, and I blurted out, “I meant no harm.”
“No harm?” Father snapped. “Giving away your magic? Carrying on as a human? You’ve made a laughing stock of yourself, and us!”
“I’m sorry you feel that way.”
“But you’renot sorry? Wulfren, can’t you see that you’ve done wrong?”
“No.” I took deep breath. “No, I can’t. Father, I’m sorry for not speaking with you first, I regret that, but it’s done now. My mind hasn’t changed, and I’m asking your permission to leave the court for good.”
Father looked as though he’d been slapped in the face.
Selby’s mouth opened and closed several times before he uttered, “Wulf, have you gone mad?”
“You want to leave your home?” Father asked, eyes glittering.
I nodded quickly.
“Permission denied!”
“What? Father, please, I want to live with him.”
“No!” Father shouted, slicing his hand through the air. “It’s a ridiculous notion. No son of mine will turn human!”
