Jordan whispered, “Relax, you’re going to call attention to us. Don’t act so guilty. Breathe—three counts in, six out.”
Spenser took a deep breath. He tried to take Jordan’s advice but he knew what was soon to come—the sermon. All too often it was about some form of sinful behavior and frequently included the abomination of being gay.
Sure enough, today’s sermon was on Leviticus 20:13:If there is a man who lies with a male as those who lie with a woman, both of them have committed a detestable act; they shall surely be put to death. Their blood guiltiness is upon them.
Why today of all days? Spenser thought, his face draining of all color once again, his blood turning cold. Did Delaney suspect something? Did he choose his topic because Spenser had brought Jordan to church? But the Bishop couldn’t have known Spenser would be bringing Jordan today, could he? He turned his head slightly and glanced at Jordan. He was smiling! In fact, it could even be called a smirk!
