Chapter 19

Getting a degree of control over himself, Spenser rose and looked around. The living room was a mess. Empty beer bottles sat on end tables. Newspapers lay strewn on the floor. A plate with a half-eaten sandwich and an unfinished glass of milk adorned the coffee table.

The kitchen was worse. The sink was piled high with dirty dishes. Empty Stouffer’s and Marie Callender’s boxes were overflowing the garbage bin.

Spenser opened the refrigerator. It was empty, save for beer, condiment jars, a half-gallon of milk gone bad, and two shriveled tomatoes. On the table, amongst the debris, he saw the cursed index card which had exposed Jordan’s betrayal. It had been ripped to pieces and left lying there. Spenser looked at Henrietta, sighed deeply, and sadly shook his head. Henrietta whined.
