Chapter 21

Three times he’d driven to the school, parked where he’d have a clear view of the parking lot, and waited. And three times he’d driven away without having spoken with Spenser. Twice Spenser had left the building with other staff, so it wouldn’t have been prudent for Jordan to approach him. The most recent time, when Spenser had come out of the school by himself, Jordan had chickened out, afraid Spenser would rebuff any attempt Jordan might make at reconciliation.

This time, determined not to let fear of a negative outcome dissuade him, Jordan drove to Spirit of Peace Lower School and parked. If Spenser left the building alone, Jordan wouldn’t let anything keep him from trying to talk to Spenser and regaining what he’d lost.

The final bell rang. Jordan sat up, looking expectantly toward the school. Students began to pour out of the building, singly and in groups, talking, laughing, running to meet their parents, who were waiting in cars to pick up their children.
