Chapter 23

With a hammering heart, he tried to sort through his own panic. Three hours. He had three hours to get out of here, or he’d end up with Varg again—or so he assumed.

“Have you worked for Varg for long?”

The man grunted, not confirming it was Varg, but not denying it either. Eli didn’t ask more questions, all he could do was sit back and wait for the right moment to act. 9

Kol steered the car out of Rockshade and toward Ashork. Leo was by his side, going through notes. When Kol’s phone rang, Elora’s name flashed on the screen, and a knot formed in his gut.

“Yes,” he barked.

“They took Eli!”

Kol hit the brakes, the car behind them blared its horn, but stopped before hitting them from behind. “We’re coming.”

He tossed the phone to Leo, who softly was trying to soothe Elora, and crossed over to the other side of the road, steering back toward the city. Luckily, it had taken longer than Kol had planned to get on the road, so they had only been on their way for a few minutes.
