Chapter 68

The sleeping arrangements were prepared for the next few days. Darcy, Julian and Shannon would share the brothers’ room, and Finn would sleep on a mat on the girls’ floor. It was nearly midnight before the house settled for good. Finn had made himself as comfortable as possible in the center rug of Keela and Kyla’s bedroom, staring at the stationary ceiling fan. He tossed and turned, but sleep did not find him. Finally, frustrated, Finn tiptoed down to the kitchen to sneak some of Mrs. Keegan’s butter cookies.

As he stepped inside he saw that someone else had had the same idea. Hugh was already in front of the fridge, a plate of cookies in one hand, and a glass of milk in the other. He and Finn looked at each other. Hugh was the first to speak.

“Can’t sleep?” Finn shook his head. Hugh motioned him to the kitchen table. “I’ll fetch you a glass of milk.” Finn sat as instructed and folded his hands in his lap.

“Mrs. Keegan won’t be mad if we have some, will she?”
