Lou nodded. “Not really. Oh, I have some news.” He grinned. “Harber wants me to apply to become a detective.”

“Fantastic,” Quint replied at the same moment that his desk phone rang. He answered and was on his feet seconds later, saying, “I’ll see you next time, guys,” before hurrying out of the squad room.

“Our cue to leave, too,” Lou said.

“Are you back on the job now?” Rory asked.

“Not until tomorrow morning.”

“Good. Then we can talk about the gallery. You need a ride back there.”

“Yep.” Lou slanted a look at him as they waited for the elevator. “Are you okay?”

“Why wouldn’t I be?”

“Maybe because you were held at gunpoint by Hanks, threatened, then had to come down here and relive it all when you made your statement?”

“I’m fine,” Rory replied crisply, getting on the elevator. He was quiet until they got to his car. Then he started shaking while trying to get the key into the ignition.
