“Dominic, will you come over and play checkers with me some time?”
“Of course, any time you want,” Dominic said, ruffling the boy’s hair. “Sandro works at the bakery in the mornings. I could use some company.”
“Me, too,” said the boy. “Tomorrow?”
“Okay. Tomorrow,” laughed Dominic. “But for now, we should be going. Sandro gets up very early for his job at the bakery.”
“We should get together for dinner again,” said Maria. “I enjoyed having you guys here so much.”
“Yes, let’s do that,” said Sandro. “I’ll bring some bread from the bakery. They’ve got a lot of great stuff there.”
“Will you bring me a cannoli?” asked Massimo.
“Yes, a whole bunch,” laughed Sandro.
“Chocolate?”
“That’s the best kind,” he said. “And I’ll bring a few things for the rest of us.”
“Let me give you my phone number,” said Maria, “and we’ll set something up soon. We should do it the night before you have a day off, so we don’t have to watch the clock.”
