Chapter 14

I gave her a blank expression. “I don’t know. I’m not an expert on Queen Vivian’s secret police.”

Katherine shouted. “What am I going to do? I can’t go back home. I might be wanted.”

“You can stay with us,” Mom said.

Something roared—almost like the sound one expected from a car engine. Then, footsteps banged against the basement steps. Figures. Dad must have arrived home from work and closed the garage door. Closing the door created an echo. Then, more footsteps squeaked across the floor until Dad—who sported his usual attire of a button-down shirt, blazer, tie, and dress pants—became visible.

“What’s going on?” he asked, looking at the group of us, after putting his leather briefcase on the living room table.

“Queen Vivian’s secret police wolves killed Katherine’s parents,” Mom said.
