Raquel approached me in the school hallway a couple of mornings later.

“I need to talk to you,” she said.

Damn. That phrase was never a good sign. I tugged at my backpack straps. “Sure.”

We stepped into an empty nearby stairway while Raquel rubbed at her neck.

“Have you heard from Anastasia?” Raquel asked.

“No. Why? Is something wrong?”

“We had a date a couple of nights ago, and she never met me at the restaurant. I went by Foley Mansion a couple of times, but Queen Vivian told me she was busy and would get in touch with me soon,” Raquel said, beginning to cry.

I took in a deep breath; something clicked in my mind. A lot of bad things had happened lately. Katherine’s parents’ deaths, my parents’ deaths, Katherine fleeing, and the detention camps, to name a few.
