Chapter 15

That opportunity arose when Rowan’s door opened and shut. Alec waited another five minutes, killing time by double-checking his e-mail. Nothing from his father, but one from Zander wondering why Alec was ignoring his texts.

He felt sixteen again, sneaking out of his room when his mother had put him on homework duty. He took a moment to peer over the banister to see if Graham was lurking around, then crept the few feet to Rowan’s door when it was all clear. Though he had a built-in excuse with the clothes he’d scooped up from where Rowan had twisted out of them, he was as nervous now as he’d been on his father’s doorstep. He knocked lightly, wincing at how loud it sounded in the quiet house.

A bed creaked. Alec stepped away from where he’d been crowding the door before Rowan answered it.

“What do you want?” Rowan said, his tone abrupt.
