“Oh, my God, you know what I just realized?” Alec said with a laugh. “You’re a black cat, and apparently, I’m going to be some kind of witch in a few days. We are walking clichés.”

Rowan burbled in the back of his throat, neither growl nor meow or any other sound Alec had ever heard a cat make.

“Ha, I kind of like you like this. You can’t talk back to me or call me an idiot for what I might say.” He laughed again when Rowan butted his head against his hip. “All right, I’ll take that under advisement.” The contact teased him with another question. “Can I pet you? Would that be too creepy?”

He wouldn’t do it unless Rowan made it clear it was all right, and it certainly wasn’t a liberty he would take if Rowan was in human form. Rowan seemed as unsure of the gesture as he was, but after a moment, he tilted his head down and slid it under Alec’s fingertips
