Will turned his back on the stark landscape and perched on the edge of the window seat. “You know why I left?”

“I know you did it because you thought you had to protect me and Mom.”

His jaw hardened. “Everything I’ve done since that night has been to protect you two.”

“But from what?” He was tired of these vague enemies they were supposed to have. As easy as it was to accept that all of this was real, without some concrete answers, he couldn’t see a reason why they had to waste so much time hiding. “Uncle Martin makes it sound like he knew who might be after you, but he said you never found the people who killed your parents. Why wouldn’t you want to bring them to justice for what they did?”
