“I’ll lock up,” he said. He had a lot to think about, including the very real possibility he and his father might be leaving in the morning if Uncle Martin decided to kick them out. “I’m sorry we pulled you away from Graham.”

“It’s okay. He’s still sleeping. I don’t think he’ll wake up until morning.” Rowan shuffled his feet, but otherwise didn’t leave. “I have a favor to ask, but I’m pretty sure this is rotten timing on my part. You’ve had a rough night, too. I’m sorry about that, by the way. I wanted your birthday to end better than this.”

“So did I.” With the cups rinsed out, he leaned against the counter. There wasn’t a relationship in the house that wasn’t in turmoil right now, and he wouldn’t make it worse for Rowan by crowding him. “What do you need?”
