“We’ve done extensive research on the Raleigh family and its somewhat tragic history,” Carlton said. “We now know that Wade Raleigh and the former slave known as Moses Raleigh were a couple in everything but name for the last twenty years of their lives. Even though they were apparently a committed couple, they were separated in life. I think it would be nice if they were no longer separated in death, don’t you?”
“Oh, that’s so sweet,” Mrs. Howard said. “I think you must be an incurable romantic, Mr. Perry.”
“I don’t know about that. I just think it’s the right thing to do.”
“Is there anything else we need to take care of?” Mr. Howard said.
“Will you need a court order to exhume these bodies, so to speak?”
“Not when it’s a private transaction on private property. Besides which, there’s nobody around who even cares anymore.”
