Part 61: He’s called David

Lisa got the cub feeling a sense of calm in her heart despite the storm brewing around them.

***

Lisa spent the entire weekend immersed in research alongside Canary, both of them piecing together every clue they could find.

By Monday, the tension was thick, but they were one step closer to unraveling the truth.

While at work, Lisa's phone buzzed, and her heart skipped when she saw it was Canary calling. She quickly answered, eager for any news.

"I found him," Canary's voice came through, a mix of triumph and determination. "The man who posted the video. I'm on my way to meet him right now."

Lisa felt a wave of relief wash over her, but she held herself in check. "That's amazing, Canary. Be careful. Let me know what happens."

"I will," he replied, his voice steady. "I'll update you as soon as I know more. We're getting closer."

Lisa smiled, her optimism returning. She hung up the phone and returned to her work, but her mind was focused entirely on Canary and the crucial lead he was about to follow.

——

Canary arrived at the apartment of the man who had posted the video, his heart pounding with anticipation.

He approached the door and knocked firmly, waiting in tense silence.

Moments later, the door creaked open, revealing a man in his late thirties, his face paling at the sight of Canary standing before him.

The man's eyes widened in recognition, his voice shaking. "W..What are you doing here?" he stammered, stepping back instinctively.

Canary's gaze was intense as he stood tall, his presence unyielding. "I think you know exactly why I'm here," he replied, his tone calm but authoritative.

"We need to talk."

The man's fear was palpable as he glanced nervously around, clearly weighing his options. "I…I don't know anything about you, about the video," he sputtered, his voice strained.

Canary stepped forward, his tone unwavering. "You're going to tell me everything, starting with how you got involved."

" ..I..I..I don't know.." His voice shook.

Canary, fed up with the man's evasion, pushed him away and entered the apartment without hesitation.

The man stumbled back, too frightened to resist as Canary moved past him, his presence overpowering.

They both sat down, the tension thick in the room.

The man was visibly shaking, his hands clenched tightly in his lap.

Canary studied him for a moment, before speaking calmly, though his voice carried the weight of authority.

"I need the truth. Now. How did you get the video?"

The man stammered, his voice barely a whisper. "I don't know anything! I swear, I don't know…"

Canary's patience snapped. He leaned in close, his grip tightening on the man's throat.

"Tell me," he demanded, his voice cold as ice.

The man's face reddened, and his breath became shallow.

Finally, he gasped out. "Okay! Okay! I got the video from a friend! He told me to post it. That's all I know, I swear!"

Canary released his grip, leaning back just slightly. He pulled out the photo of David, the, The one Lisa had showed him "Is this the person who gave you the video?"

The man's eyes went wide with recognition, and he nodded frantically.

"Y-Yes, that's him! That's the one who sent me the video and told me to post it!"

Canary's expression darkened, his suspicions confirmed. "Who is he? Where can I find him?"

The man swallowed hard, fear still evident in his eyes. " His name is David. He works with JJ Media…"

" Are you sure about that ?" Canary asked.

" Yes Sir, He's a videographer .." The man said.

Canary's mind raced as he stood up, the pieces starting to fall into place.

"You've given me enough," he said, turning to leave. "Stay out of my way."

As he exited the apartment, his thoughts were already focused on the next step finding David and uncovering the full extent of the conspiracy.

Good enough Canary knew JJ Media so well. So he got into his car and drove to JJ Media.

——

Canary drove into the parking lot of JJ Media, his cap pulled low over his eyes, a stark contrast to the usual polished businessman he presented himself as.

He wasn't here for a scheduled meeting, and the laid-back look made it all the more surprising when Denis, the CEO, spotted him approaching.

Denis stood frozen for a moment, clearly taken aback. He straightened his suit, eyes narrowing as he processed the sight.

"Canary Anderson?" he asked, his voice tinged with disbelief. "What brings you here?"

Canary smiled faintly, adjusting the brim of his cap. "Needed to have a word with you, Denis. It's been a while."

Denis chuckled, though the surprise lingered. "You could've called, you know. Didn't expect you to show up like this."

With a small shrug, Canary kept his cool as he walked toward the entrance, the tension in the air hanging lightly between them.

Canary and Denis went and sat in Denis's office.

Canary slid his phone from his pocket and handed it over to Denis, showing him a picture of David.

"I'm looking for him," Canary said, his voice steady, but there was an edge to it that hinted at the urgency behind his search.

Denis took a quick glance at the photo, his brow furrowing. "Ah, David," he said thoughtfully.

"I know him. He's been around for a while. I'll have my assistant give him a call."

He turned to his assistant, who had been quietly observing the exchange from the corner of the room. "Call David, please. Tell him we need a word."

The assistant nodded, walking briskly to the phone. A few moments passed, the room filled with a quiet anticipation.

But when the assistant returned, her face was pale, the phone still clutched tightly in her hand.

"Mr. Denis," she began, her voice low, "David… he just resigned. A few minutes ago. And he's already left the company."

Denis and Canary exchanged a glance, both caught off guard by the unexpected turn of events.

Canary's grip on his phone tightened slightly, his mind racing. "Resigned?" he echoed. "Just like that?"

Denis nodded, clearly unsettled by the news. "It seems so. I'm sorry, Canary. This wasn't how I expected it to go."

" He must be aware that I'm looking for him." Canary cursed.

" What do you want him for ?" Denis asked.

" I will tell you later." Canary answered Denis, got up and looked at the assistant.

" Did you say he just left?" He asked again.
