Chapter 17: The Old Radio Tower

Outside, Paul secures the lamps and tools in the saddlebags on Maggie's back.

I put my foot in the stirrup and pull myself halfway up. My body comes back down onto the ground with a thud.

"It's getting dark. You sure you want to ride alone?" Paul's face is stern.

Taking in my surroundings, I realize just how dark it really is. Shrugging my shoulders, I saunter heavy-footed over to where Paul is standing. Taking Maggie's reins, he secures them to the back of Elroy's saddle and pulls himself up onto the horse's back. I clutch his extended hand, and he hoists me up onto the seat in front of him.

My phone goes off. I wiggle to retrieve it from my pocket.

"It's Maria, I'll let her know we're on our way home."

Elroy walks. Tilting my head back, I stare into the dark, starry sky and huff.

"What's wrong?"
