The Outsider in the Family

Hearing his daughter calling him so coquettishly, John Davis couldn't help but show a helpless smile. He was weak towards his daughter and with her usual obedient attitude and kind personality, it was hard for him to put on a harsh front in front of her.

All he wanted was to continue to pamper his good daughter to make sure that she would never be wronged.

"What is it Cel?"

"It's about Ann," Celeste said hesitantly and bit her lower lips. Whenever she showed this appearance, it could easily cause heartache in her father's heart. After all, seeing such a fragile girl being wronged would make one's heart ached terribly.

As expected, John Davis's face darkened. "What is it about her?"

"Father, do you adopt her because you don't want me anymore?" Celeste asked with choked voice. Her voice sounded so miserable as if she was about to cry in any moment. With her delicate appearance and gesture, it could easily cause one's heart to ache terribly.

John Davis moved forward and patted his daughter's head tenderly. He shook his head. "Silly girl, she's just another one candidate."

"For the surgery?" Celeste asked as a glint flashed within her eyes.

"You're smart."

Celeste pursed her lips. It was not like she was smart, but her father had adopted three girls in total for the past year. All of them were girls who have AB Rh negative bloodline. But not a single one of them stayed within their family as they were sent back to the orphanage after they stayed here for less than a months' time.

Why?

It was obviously because their heart didn't match hers. Even though their bloodline matched, their heart was far from matching. All they could do was to help her with some blood transfusion but couldn't help with her heart's problem.

Ann was the fourth one and also the oldest one.

"But if it matched, would she even give up her heart?" Celeste asked in soft voice.

John Davis let out a faint laugh. "Even if she didn't want to, does it matter? As long as I used my connection, I'll be able to get her to agree."

Seeing her father, Celeste smiled brightly. She knew that she didn't have much time anymore and her father had to continue searching for the heart donor. But patients with AB Rh negative that matched her was very rare.

He didn't manage to find one even after all these years.

Now that there was another new orphan, John Davis simply took her in so that he could do test. He didn't know whether the heart would be suitable or not because they were slightly different from normal humans.

But no matter how slim the chance was, he wanted to take it.

If it was proven to match, he would spare all the effort needed to take the girl's heart.

"Thank you, Daddy. You're the best."

"Of course."

John Davis patted his daughter's head tenderly, enjoying her hug and comfort. "I'll finish my work first. You can rest."

"Dad, you still have to eat in time." Celeste pursed her lips.

"I know, I know…"

That night, everyone was feeling differently.

Ann looked at the row of clothes that was left in her wardrobe. Looking at the middle school uniform inside, she could guess that it belonged to someone else who was living in this room previously.

"They didn't even bother to cover up the fact that they're trying to 'kidnap' children."

Shaking her head lightly, Ann shoved those clothes to the corner. She would not use them because they were too big for her. There were many other clothes that they had prepared for her to use.

As she came down, she noticed that everyone was already sitting on the table.

Charles raised his head when he heard her came. He furrowed his eyebrows. "Why are you so long? We're already so hungry and tired from waiting for you to come!"

Ann arched her eyebrows. "I didn't know you have breakfast so early."

"What do you mean by that?" Charles snapped once more.

"Charles," Mrs. Davis warned from the side.

Charles's small face scrunched. He always hated it when his father suddenly brought girls from outside and proclaimed them to be his new sister. He didn't need any new sister because Celeste alone was already more than enough.

Celeste looked at Ann and smiled brightly. "Sister, come here and eat breakfast with us."

"Oh."

Ann sat beside Celeste and looked at the food in front of her. Soup, fried rice, omelet. They all looked quite appetizing.

"Eat a lot, Sister."

Passing a look at Celeste, Ann didn't even bother to answer. Even though she was present, her body exuded the aura of indifference as if she didn't care about them.

Mrs. Davis snorted and didn't even bother to look at the insolent girl anymore. She was thinking about how to make this girl more presentable, but in the end, she felt that it would be better to just let this child suffer first.

When those women asked her about it, she could just simply say that this was an adopted child.

That way, she would not lose that much face.
