Brenna was released the day of Eaton’s funeral. She stood in the cemetery next to the casket and listened to the minister speak. It all seemed so unreal. Too much death had occurred.
The day mocked the mourners with the bright sun and the birds chirping. It was a day of promises and happiness that shone down on the tears that flowed. Even the fresh green grass around them and the early spring flowers couldn’t erase the gloom inside of Brenna.
Dressed in a solid black dress, Brenna leaned against Slaton. With his arms around her he pulled her close to his suited body. He didn’t care for Eaton but never would have wished this on him. He felt Brenna’s pain in his very soul.
