"Now, tell me there is an easier way to get to the top. I really don't feel like climbing this number of stairs" I said as I gazed up at the unending steps.
"Nope, we have to climb. Everyone hates it, but the teachers say it is a demonstration of perseverance and drive. Only by working hard can we reach the top." He said in a stoic voice as he posed.
"PFFFT" I couldn't help but laugh which caused him to go red with embarrassment before punching me in the arm.
"No! Not you too, I will not stand for abuse!" I said sternly. I already had Hermione beating the living daylight out of me constantly. I would not and will not tolerate another one.
"What are you, a pussy?" he asked mockingly.
"Oh yeah-yeah-yeah, I'm the pussy, come here, let me show you," I said menacingly which made Percival pale as he backed away.
"You don't have to physically walk up the stairs. The teachers allow the use of magic. And the first one to reach the top will get a reward." He said quickly as I was about to hit him. I paused and pondered.
"What reward?" I asked Percival who was clearly sighing in relief.
"*Ahem* There is no prize- Wait-wait-wait, that doesn't mean that there's nothing to gain out of it!" he said quickly as he saw me winding up for a punch.
"You can get points for coming in top ten as well as get in the good books with the teachers. They usually award extra points to hard-working individuals. These points can be traded for higher-level spells and charms. Anything of the sort. Even items or materials. The school encourages people to try harder and in return, with enough points, almost anything is available to obtain." He spoke.
That surprised me. Unlike Hogwarts where the points only served for some petty competition, here, they served a much grander purpose. Higher spells meant stronger wizards. and the students who obtain such spells are also quite intelligent and or hard working. Since I assume a lot of points need to be obtained the more valuable the item you wanted. And this, in turn, provided the school with stronger wizards for competitions like the one going on this year. It was very intelligent and well thought out.
As I finished my thoughts the voice of Professor Brambleton rang out in the Colosseum, "all students attention please. These stairs are the ones you must climb. Students who have already done this before you know the drill but for those of you who are new, let me explain…"
He pretty much explained the same thing and gave the cliché encouraging words to work hard and yada-yada-yada.
"… That's it, when I say go, you will all start at the same time. but one thing, no aparating!" he warned. I sighed at his words, I wanted to try it out since I had learned how to do it, but it seems I still have to wait.
But I wanted the points since I had many uses for it. and first place would give out a lot. Since that was the case, I needed to achieve it. every year, the older students got the top place. Rarely would a student below year 5 get a top place and even rarer for students below year 4. It was impossible for students below that since they didn't have the knowledge necessary.
As I thought about what to do a genius idea hit me and I began to grin.
"Bro, the smile is scary man, what are you planning?" Percival asked.
I turned to him with the same smile, "Wait and see. I suggest you jump when I tell you to, ok?" I said calmly.
"Ok…" Percival answered as he looked at me with a puzzled look. I dismissed it and waited for the Professor to give the go signal. I crouched down on the ground and hovered my hand five centimetres off the ground waiting patiently. Some looked at me oddly but dismissed it.
"READY! SET! GOOOOO!" he yelled but immediately, I placed my hand on the ground, "Magnus glacies aetatis!" I whispered with a massive smile on my face. It was like time stopped as a massive amount of ice shot in all directions.
"Now!" I yelled and Percival jumped instantly avoiding the ice that surged under his feet. Those who were closest to me didn't even know what happened before they were turned into ice sculptures. Those who were at the perimeter were able to discern something and jumped when they saw Percival do it.
I then got up and noticed the shivering professor who was half frozen. As I walked past him, I gave him a side glance, "So sorry, didn't see you there," I smirked and ascended the stairs with Percival.
"Wow! You got at least 95% of the students with that one move!" he exclaimed in shock as he followed behind me.
"Get back here you weasel! Don't let me catch you!" screamed the professor. I stopped and looked at him for a moment before waving my hand. The ice on his body expanded and froze him completely.
*gasp*
Everyone looked at me in shock.
"T-T-Tom what did you just do!" yelled Percival in my ear. I turned towards him sharply and glared at him.
"Yell in my ear again and I'll freeze you solid like that prick. Now shut your trap!" I snapped angrily and stared at the remaining students.
"Sorry ladies and gentlemen, but you are all destined to stay here until I win. Don't worry though, the ice is not cold, just meant to seal those encased in it. nobody will die." I said with a mocking smile as I bowed. Everyone looked at me with a puzzled look.
I waved my hand and a massive wall of ice 20 meters tall emerged from the frozen ground and covered the entire colosseum. Then, with another wave of my hand, a green fire started to burn on the ice. But what shocked everyone, was that the ice wasn't melting.
"Now, stay there like good little piggies. I'll set you free when I get first place." I said with another smile.
"Tom, what's with the fire?" Percival asked as stared at the wall of burning ice with shock.
"The fire is special; it will absorb all fire type spells. That way the ice cannot be melted. It also burns living beings. So, they cannot scale it. they can fly over it, but I'll shoot them down if they try." I said with a shrug.
