I sobbed, and Trent pressed harder on the gas pedal. He made it to the hospital in record time, and once again, very gently, he cradled me in his arms as he carried me inside the ER. Doctor Mattias was already there waiting.
"This way," Doctor Mattias said, her tone all business.
Her heels clacked against the tiled floor, and I now concentrated on that sound, fighting to keep both the pain and the horrifying thoughts at bay.
"Put her on the bed," she instructed, and Trent carefully laid me on the hospital bed. "What happened?" She slipped on a pair of surgical gloves.
My vision started to blur, and everything around me was out of focus. Trent stood beside me, holding my hand. A nurse bustled around the room.
"I don't know," Trent said. "She just started moaning in her sleep, like she was in pain, and then we noticed all the blood."
"You have to save the babies," I said through my sobs. "Please."
