A strange girl

It was early morning, morning mist covering the simple village houses near the foot of the mountain.

I left early, before dawn, to fetch firewood and water for breakfast, it was winter and with low temperatures it was necessary to keep the house warm to avoid freezing.

"Mom, I'm going out to get firewood and water from the lake near the foot of the mountain, maybe catch some fish. Do you have something you want?" I asked before leaving the house and starting the day's usual chores.

"There's nothing in particular, remember to dress well, don't take too long to get home, be careful, it's snowed a lot recently, there's snow everywhere, be careful not to slip and hurt yourself, and..."

"Mom! Enough, I got the message, don't worry, I'll be careful"

"Alright, be careful"

"I'm leaving"

I grabbed my fur coat, put on my boots, grabbed the basket, bucket and fishing rope and left the house.

It was cold and the cloudy sky reflected in my gray eyes, I walked towards the foot of the mountain to get firewood, there were some trees in that region, pine trees stretched above the mountainside that led to the lake, I took a small ax and cut some branches and put it in the basket, when I thought it was enough, I left the woods and headed towards the lake.

I reached the edge of the lake carefully, doing my best not to make a noise, took my spear from my back and threw it towards the lake after taking careful aim.

I repeated the process a few times and after catching about six fish I stopped.

I filled a bowl with a lid and continued walking along the edge of the lake.

I felt the cold wind on my face and liked the cool feeling in the morning. It was midwinter, a little later and soon it would be spring, we would have to travel to the city to visit some distant relatives, it would be the birthday of my grandfather, head of the Mordha family, an aristocratic family in the capital.

I walked fifteen minutes towards the slope, it was time to go back or my mom would be worried.

I picked up my pace and ran, ready to return when I stopped.

I turned my head toward the edge of the lake and rubbed my eyes, as if to see if my eyes were playing tricks on me.

When I was sure it wasn't a mirage, I approached it slowly, preparing myself for any unforeseen events that might occur.

When I got to the edge of the lake I could clearly see what it was, it was a girl who was unconscious, her hair was brown and her skin pale, she looked to be about 17 years old and was wearing a white silk dress.

I found it very strange, how could she survive with such light clothes in this cold ???

I approached to see if she was really alive and after confirming, I muttered in disbelief.

"I can't believe she survived this cold! Unbelievable, what a weird girl, doesn't she feel cold?"

Without thinking twice, I went to her and picked her up, her body was small and very light, it seemed to have no bones.

"I'll take her home, it's better than leaving her here!"

I took her away without thinking twice, having no idea of the dangers that awaited me in the future for making that decision.
