Rebirth

Pain and darkness. Nothingness but pain and darkness. Harley reaches out her hand, trying to feel anything. But there is nothing—just silence.

Harley gasps, trying to draw air into her lungs. Was this hell? She hoped it wasn't. She just wanted to die in peace. But pain roared through her body again, causing her to cry out. It was worse than when Jane was torturing her. It felt like her body was being knitted back together. Clenching her teeth together, Harley tried to ride the pain out and stay awake. But the pain overwhelmed her, causing the darkness to take her.

The next time Harley woke up, she was in a room. Blinking, her gaze roamed around the room. It looked like her old room when she was still at home. That didn't make any sense. She hadn't slept in this room since she had gotten married at the age of 18. Jake had proposed soon after they had met, and they had a whirlwind wedding.

Glancing over to the table that sat beside her bed, she saw a phone. Puzzled, she picks it up. Her eyes widen at the date on the screen. It was April 23, 20xx. Wasn't that her 18th birthday? What happened? Was she dreaming? Shouldn't she be dead? She was pretty sure she was. Reaching out, she pinches her arm. Dammit, that hurt.

Hurriedly stumbling out of bed, Harley heads to the bathroom. Her mouth falls open when she sees a youthful girl staring back at her. Bright green eyes, flaming red hair that fell to her knees, soft white skin, plump pink lips.

Harley reaches out to touch her skin. Finally, finally, she was back, could change how her life would go. She didn't have to marry Jack. Harley could give up her right to the company, give it to Jane. She didn't want to deal with the headache. Or deal with her annoying parents or the bitch of a sister. Harley could be free at last. Tears well up in her eyes as she leans over the sink, wails escaping her lips. She cried for the old her, the unborn child that lost its life. And for all the hurt and pain that had caused her downfall.

A knock on the door caused her head to jerk up. Wiping her eyes, Harley heads to the door to see who is knocking. If she remembered correctly, it would be her mother Slyvia, telling her to get up to school and wish her a happy birthday. Not that it matters. Slyvia never had much to do with her oldest daughter. There always was a distance between the mother and daughter pair. Harley never could figure out why Slyvia would dote on Jane and not her.

Opening the door, Harley sees Slyvia. "Good morning, mother."

Slyvia looks slightly startled at the fact that Harley was up already. But, of course, it was unusual for Harley to be up already. Shrugging, Slyvia glances at her daughter before smiling.

"Good morning, daughter. And happy birthday. You are 18 today."

Harley nods rather stiffly. "Yes, thank you, mother. I need to get ready for school."

She slammed the door shut in Slyvia's face leaving her to look somewhat stunned. What had gotten into her oldest daughter this morning? They usually had to coax Harley out of bed, and it would take three or four times of knocking on the door.

Harley takes deep breaths before heading to the closet to find school clothing. Frowning when she sees all the dark clothing. Damn, she forgot that she used to wear mostly black. Shaking her head, Harley starts digging into her closet to find something that wasn't depressing to wear.
