So he spoke, though he had no answer for him. “What do you want then?” He felt Tom’s eyes on him before he looked at him, a different kind of anger directed at him. “You just listed all the reasons to break up with her. You’re practically broken up now. But you’re calling her when according to what you’ve said, you should be running for your life. So which is it?” He saw the anger melt away from Tom’s face, looking at him with no further words before facing forward and walking back towards the garden.

“What happened?” Tate asked Sawyer in a whisper when he took his seat.

He didn’t think he would have to report back to Tate. But of course his best friend who has been worried about him for nearly two years now will ask. So what to say? Lying to Tate isn’t fun. Sawyer shrugged. “I don’t know.”
