New Skill

"What should be my first mission?"

Adrian was wondering what mission he should take. So he walked straight up to the board in the hall, with all the different tasks. He could only pick those that were a rank above him or less than that.

As he looked at the board, he could not find any fun tasks. It was mostly about picking up herbs or helping a local shop.

A few were about fighting, but it mentioned that it was only mice. So how good could a fight with mice be?

He thought about it for a long time, and he chose to fight the mice. The mission took place at a church on the outskirts of the capital.

The cellar had been overrun with mice, and they needed someone to take care of that. So the church listed a mission in the adventurers guild. He didn't understand why it was an adventurer's job.

He went to the church so that he could get his quest done. The church was in a sloppy place. All the houses were run down, and people were sleeping on the street.

The church looked like all the other buildings, but all the windows still had glass in them.

He went up to the door and knocked. He could feel the door tremble, about to crumble in front of him.

The door suddenly opened, and out came a priest. He was an older man with a long white beard. He looked like a kind older man.

"Welcome to my church; how may I help you, young man" The priest looked at Adrian and was curious what a young man like him wanted here.

"I am here to help you with the mice!" Adrian answered with an icy face.

"Oh, it has been at the guild for a long time; thank you for helping, young man!" The priest beckoned for Adrian to follow as he showed the way towards the cellar.

Adrian just followed the priest. He just wanted the quest over with, so he could get higher ranks and fight stronger creatures.

As Adrian arrived in the cellar, a big door was locked. The priest gave Adrian a key and told him, "We locked the mice in there; your job is to kill them! good luck!" He turned around and went back up into the church.

As he put the key in, it made a loud clank noise. He turned the key, and another clank noise was heart. As the second clank was made, he could hear a loud screech from the other side of the door.

The door slammed open, and Adrian was pushed back a meter. Adrian looked at the door opening to see a hoard of giant mice.

'Now I know why they needed adventurers.' He was startled, but he was ready to fight. Adrian showed all his battle and killing intent, and all the mice turned to him while releasing their killing intent.

There were around 10 of these giant mice. As Adrian looked at them more, they looked more like rats than mice. The mission said mice, so Adrian assumed they were mice.

Adrian just charged straight into the middle of them and used his whirlwind attack. The attack hit all the mice, and they were all fatally hurt.

"I thought they might have been strong ..." Adrian was really disappointed. Then he thought about it, but of course, this was a low-rank task.

As all the mice had died, Adrian cut off a part of them, as he had been told to do. So he could prove that he did the mission he promised to do.

He went back up to the priest, told him he was done. The priest was pleased. Adrian just left the church and went back to the guild to complete the task.

As he came back, he could see it was pretty empty here. He didn't know where everyone was, but he didn't really care since it did not concern him.

He went up to his personal receptionist and showed the task he had completed and the body parts to prove he had done a perfect job. The job didn't pay too well, and he got ten bronze for the task.

It was also getting late; he had to find a good place to stay. "Uhm, can I ask where there is a cheap place to sleep close by?" Adrian chose to ask the receptionist for help.

"The Lush Seals inn right down the road is a perfect place for cheap money!" The receptionist came with a name. Adrian had never heard it before, so he chose to go there.

As he walked out of the guild, he realized that it had become dark. The city was gorgeous at night. The lamps that lid up the paved roads, the beautiful wooden houses. There were even more people out now than there were in the day. It was a gorgeous sight to see.

As he walked down the busy streets towards the inn, he got caught up in the atmosphere and chose to go shopping for a bid. He had quite a bit of gold, so he might as well see if there was anything of use.

He saw a small shop on the street corner; no one really went there. Adrian felt he had to go there; he got a weird feeling. He thought it might be his 'instinct' skill that was telling him something.

He went into the shop to see an older man behind the desk. He looked like someone with many years of experience.

Adrian went over to the older man. "Hey, do you have anything interesting here?" Adrian just asked him with a cold face. He didn't feel like looking around and trusted his instinct just to ask.

"Oh young man, what might you be looking for" The older man just looked at Adrian with a warm elderly smile, like he had just seen someone precious to him.

"I don't know; my instincts just told me to come here!" Adrian just answered him honestly.

"Oh, I might have something of interest for someone like you; wait for a second!" The older man gave Adrian a small, mysterious smile while he went into the back of the shop.

Adrian waited for a few minutes before the older man came back out from in there. He had a small book in his hands. Adrian couldn't see what it was, but he had a guess.

"This might interest you, young man!" The older man showed the book in his hands. Adrian had guessed it right; it was a skill book. It was a book explaining how to learn a particular skill.

The book cover said 'Blink.' The book explained it was a skill where you would teleport from one spot to another. It is a rare skill because not many teleport books are out there. Adrian didn't get why the older man had it, but he didn't care. This skill was beneficial.

"What do you think, young man?" the older man could see Adrian's interest in his eyes.

"It is a useful skill; what is the price?" Adrian didn't lie since he wanted it. He didn't want to show it too much, though.

"I will give it to you for two gold; it is very cheap" 2 gold was very cheap for any skill that would make you disappear and reappear at another place.

"I will take it!" Adrian answered without even a second going by.

"But, there is a small catch! You will have to owe me a favor!" The older man gave him a mysterious smile.

Adrian wanted this skill, but he was a little afraid of what the favor he wanted was.

"What favor do you want?"

"I don't know yet, but I won't ask for too much."

Adrian started to think. The older man didn't give him any specifics, but it didn't seem too bad of a deal. He was okay with it as long as he didn't have to slaughter innocent people.

"Okay, I accept; you can find me when you need me!"

"Good, my name is Marcus! What are you called, young man?"

"Adrian" He gave the two cold coins while they were speaking. As he took the skill, he went straight out of the store.

"Thank you for your purchase; please come again!" The older man's mysterious smile turned into a grin instead. He looked pretty sinister now.

Adrian walked away from the store, but he didn't look back at it. But if he did, he would see that it was not there anymore. Instead, there was just a typical building, like there had never even been a shop there.

Adrian went to the inn to get a place to stay. It cost ten bronze to remain there for a week. Adrian chose to pay the ten bronze, so he didn't have to worry for the following weeks' time.

He sat down in his room, and started looking at the skill book, he wanted to learn it straight away.
