Chapter 41: No Deal

It wasn't a bear or me that killed my parents, but a wraith like this one. I have magic. I can blast through this thing like I did before.

My power pulses with the beat of my heart. It lashes out like a whip.

The vampire ghosts around us scream. Their souls twist into nothing. The wraith shrieks.

I fall to the ground, just like in my vision. But the wraith hasn't disintegrated. Its still here hovering, hesitating. Except its eyes look human. Brown. At least it's not Jacques, because his eyes are gray and a little gasp of relief escapes me.

"Hey," I choke out, trying to stand. My magic throbs through my flesh like millions of fire ants.

The wraith garbles a curse and vanishes.

"That's a handy trick," Gwen says with her hand on her hip. "Why didn't you do that to start?"

I round on her. "You! You freaking pushed me into the wraith."

"Bah, I did not. I tried to push you away."
