Nyra made her way through the deserted hallway when she heard footstep approach behind her. Instincts kicking in, she spun around, pulling out her blade to whoever had been watching
her.
Her eyes widened as a man with short black hair walked closer to her and raised his hands in surrender. Nyra slowly lowered her blade back down and allowed herself to relax.
“Who are you? Why are you following me?” She inquired.
He chuckled slightly before answering, “Well, I could ask you that. What business does a girl like yourself have in such an important place?” He replied
“I'm hear to meet the king. Nothing more”. Nyra explained.
The man scoffed at her response. “Then why would they make you leave the city on your own?" The man questioned.
"That's my business." Was all Nyra said.
“Well, if you're so important, then why don't you tell me who you are? I might be able to help you” the man suggested.
His dark eyes seemed to stare right into Nyra, looking for an answer, some sort of proof, something that Nyra didn't have but was going to try to get anyway.
Nyra sighed, "I suppose I could but why should we trust each other after what I've done?"
“What has you doing here?” The man asked again, this time not giving up so easily.
“You wouldn't understand. Now if you'll excuse me I have a meeting to attend. It wasn't pleasant getting ambushed by you but since we're already here. Let's not waste any more time” Nyra concluded, turning away from him before continuing on her path.
She didn't have enough time to deal with this. As she made her way through the castle, pasting different rooms along the way.
The stone walls were painted a bland chocolate brown that covered every square of the entryway.
In-between was a small square door made of dark wood.
To each side of the doors were lights shaped like torches, which shone dimmly even though it was still early in the morning. The metal stands as the
only thing preventing it from collapsing
and starting a fire.
Finally, reaching her destination, she stopped abruptly when the door creaked open revealing a room filled with guards around the room.
leading to a large throne that sat on a dais. A tall man stood in front of the throne, wearing a black cape overtop a dark dress shirt that hung loosely off his shoulders.
He turned his head, locking eyes with Nyra before smirking and nodding towards a guard behind him.
“It is good to see you again, Nyra” he greeted her.
“Come. Take a seat” he gestured to a bench facing his desk.
“Let us talk” he added.
Without saying another word, Nyra followed the man to the throne.
Once standing opposite the King, Nyra folded her arms impatiently across her chest and leaned against the back of her chair, waiting for what he had to say.
''Cut the small talk and tell me why I'm here."
King Alistair smiled slightly. “Fair enough. So. You know how there's been rumours about a war that's taking place between our two kingdoms” he began.
Nyra nodded in reply as she tried to stay alert for where this conversation was heading.
King Alistair continued, “well, they haven't been completely true but the idea that our lands will soon become involved seems plausible. My men have also been told that you might be willing to join the cause. Is this true” he asked.
Nyra paused.
''So you want me to find whoever is doing this and eliminate them?'' She questioned.
The king shook his head ''Not exactly.''
She raised an eyebrow signalling him to continue.
''We need you on the inside so we could infiltrate the palace, gather intel and prepare ourselves to take back our country.'' He responded.
She hummed, nodding in understanding.
''Now. Your job is simple. We're expecting a group from the northern kingdom to be passing through today, the most powerful kingdom amongst our allies. You have five days to capture or destroy them. If you fail, you may be executed.''
''Understood.'' Nyra acknowledged.
"Also, one more request..we are planning to use the prisoners of the North Kingdom to create a new prison for the people. You would have complete authority over their treatment and punishments. Of course this includes their lives as well." he explained.
''What are they charged with?' She questioned, curious.
''They are being held as part of a secret experiment by another country. In exchange for them keeping their heads low, we'll pay them handsomely to do everything we want.'' he said.
''I understand. However, I need to know their names and what they did to deserve this punishment. Otherwise, it may affect me and the plans you've been making.'
King Alistair chuckled dryly at her request.
"As you can see, Nyra, we have no interest in helping you. You've proven to be more than a nuisance, and it's quite obvious that you're only interested in power. You don't care about others, except yourself."
He paused, studying her reaction carefully.
"You seem shocked. Did you think we would let you go that easily?" He questioned
"No. But if you plan to make me kill for your cause, it won't work. It will only end badly for all of us."
The King raised his eyebrows in amusement. "Is that so? Very well then, I guess I'll just have to force you to do everything we want then." He stated.
Suddenly feeling uneasy.
"I will send someone to fetch you once the meeting is over. Make sure you're ready.", was all he said before leaving her alone.
Neia hated that she had to work with people who were more likely to hold her down than help with anything.
Nyra waited a few minutes before walking outside. When she left the building she saw that the sun was already high in the sky, shining bright through the window in the hall.
After walking out for a little bit she spotted someone approaching.
A young woman dressed in a green blouse and skirt, with short hazel green locks and big sapphire eyes.
She approached Nyra, smiling lightly at her.
"Are you here for the meeting too?" She asked.
"Yeah..."
"Great! Then I'd better get going. See ya later!" With that, the greenette walked away.
Nyra stared after her, confused. She knew she should be suspicious but for some reason, she didn't feel worried at all.
Nyra stared after her, confused. She knew she should be suspicious but for some reason, she didn't feel worried at all.
Maybe because of the fact that it was just a random stranger she met. Not a threat from the future ruler of this kingdom.
