Chapter 399 ( Evacuation - III )
"Yes, they contacted me during the battle between Cloud and Johannes" - answered Alisa from the other side of the line and informed them everything she knew.
"Ok, this I didn't expect" - muttered Lindow while frowning - "I guess we have more work piled up."
"What do we do?" - asked Tatenashi as she raised an eyebrow.
"I think we can use this opportunity to rescue them" - replied Soma as he started to think - "After we hear that the civilians are safe, we'll backtrack to their location, and during this time will be the best time to save them"
"What do you have in mind?" - Houki asked as she folded her arms.
"Simple, while we fall back, you two will go rescue those two idiots" - replied Lindow as he felt the cold stare of the two women.
"I mean, you want us to enter the enemy ranks, where the most dangerous [Aragami] of the enemy forces are?" - asked Tatenashi while narrowing her eyes - "And just the two of us?"
"Now that you put it that way, I feel like I'm sending them on a suicide mission" - replied Lindow while scratching his cheek - "But out of jokes, this is our best option, more so knowing that you are the ones with the best mobility out of all of us."
". . ." - Houki and Tatenashi were silent before nodding, after all, they were aware that this was true.
"Well, we'd better make the plan so we can start it as fast as possible" - Soma said while looking at the two women, then looking at the different squad leaders.

"This was easier than I thought" - replied the general as they arrived at the scientific facilities which were honestly in a good state.
"The facilities have some holes through which the [Aragami] can enter, but only if they are small" - answered one of the soldiers - "Although this is solved with the help of the survivors."
"Perfect, let's get to work" - replied the general while a smile appeared on his face.
"By the way, sir, are you sure you wish to communicate with Soma-sama?" - asked the soldier as his eyes twinkled slightly - "Isn't this our best chance to gain control of [Fenrir: Far East]?"
The general was silent for a few seconds before drawing his pistol and burst his head with a single shot.
The other soldiers fell silent when they saw this because they did not expect this kind of reaction.
"Surprised?" - The general asked as he looked at those present - "They shouldn't be, not when they are in my position."
The general indeed wished to sell his leader and other comrades, but what the soldiers did not know, was that the strongest group was not under his control, not to mention that if all the soldiers under Soma were to die, then he would have no force left to control.
"You know what to do, I want this base operational by the time the main forces come!" - exclaimed the general as the soldiers ran around like headless chickens - "Maybe with this I can put myself in a better light in the eyes of Soma-sama and the other top brass!"
15 minutes later, the general was nodding stiffly as he heard how the defenses had been built and the holes blocked.
"Perfect, now we just need to contact the others and our job will be done" - nodded the general again as he got to thinking - "Remember to contact me when you see the other soldiers appear on the horizon."
"As you command!" - exclaimed the soldiers as they went to their posts.
The general fell silent as he saw that he had been left alone, only to look up at the ceiling of the room he was in - "This that this works because I don't want to have all these lives on my conscience"
"That's a drastic change of mind, general" - said a soldier sarcastically.
"Keep quiet and carry on with your orders" - replied the general as he rolled his eyes at him. He wasn't upset by his subordinate's words, after all, he was his right hand man - "And it's not a change of mentality, it's just that I'm becoming more aware of the situation we're in"
"If you say so" - the soldier simply shrugged his shoulders, but quickly his expression changed from a relaxed one, to a serious one - "But seriously speaking, I'm happy to hear that you didn't accept that soldier's proposition and killed him without a second thought"
"I know, although I have to admit that the proposal was tempting" - replied the general as he started to think.
"Then why didn't you accept it?" - The soldier asked as he raised an eyebrow.
"Because I am aware of the consequences" - replied the general as he folded his arms - "Something deep inside me tells me that Soma-sama will make it to this place, and I honestly don't think I need to explain more about what will happen to me if that happens."
"Right, that makes sense" - nodded the soldier while shrugging his shoulders - "Our forces won't cop to Soma-sama's army, and the civilians won't side with us, not when our enemies are the same men who saved their lives."
"Ok, enough of conversations that lead nowhere, it's time for us to start with phase two" - said the general while shaking his head - "I want you to contact Soma-sama and tell him that we are ready"
"OK" - nodded the soldier firmly as he withdrew silently.
"With that my job is done, now all that's left is to wait" - muttered the general as he walked to a chair and sat down quietly - "I'd better make myself comfortable."
* * * * *
"Ok, we're ready to start" - said Soma after receiving the message from the soldiers who were escorting the civilians - "With this all that's left is to mobilize"
"Are you girls ready?" - Lindow asked while looking at Tatenashi and Houki.
"Yes" - replied the two women although it was obvious to them that they were not very convinced with the plan.
"If it will calm them down, we'll try to get as much attention as possible while you two rescue that idiot duo" - Sofia said as she looked at Soma and notice how he nodded at her words.
"We're not even going to try hard to pull it off" - Soma replied as he shrugged - "With all the 'food' we have in us, those things will come in like sharks sniffing for blood."
"That's true" - muttered Lindow as he started to think - "The plan now doesn't sound so bad for them."
Tatenashi and Houki gave their leader a blank look as the others shook their heads.
"I think it's time for us to start the operation" - Soma said, but his expression changed as he heard the howl of a beast being heard in the distance - "I guess that was the start signal"
"Sir, the [Aragami] are initiating a new attack!" - One soldier exclaimed as the others looked at each other.
"That confirms it" - said Lindow as he shrugged - "Do the honors, Soma."
"OK" - nodded Soma seriously as he looked at the squad leaders - "Let's go! It's time to end this shit once and for all!"
"And remember you have to survive!" - Lindow added as he gave them a smile - "Soon we'll be together with our comrades and all the civilians who have been evacuated! Soon we'll be with our families!"
The soldiers shouted with excitement at Lindow's words, although the leader of the [First Unit] could only sigh with regret. He was aware that of all the soldiers who were about to leave, at least 40% of them would end up without being able to see their loved ones one last time.
"Resist to survive" - Lindow muttered as he looked at the soldiers and shook his head - "It's the only thing we can do for now."
"We are all aware that every day may be our last" - Soma replied as he listened to his friend - "We all know that, Lindow"
"But that doesn't take away from the fact that it is a tragic truth" - Lindow replied as he took his equipment and walked out of the Meeting Room.
Soma said nothing more, he just shook his head and walked out of the room with a serious expression on his face, after all, anyone could be the next to die.
"There are times when I wonder, how things would have been if the [Aragami] had never existed" - Soma muttered as he walked towards the battlefield. He stopped halfway and looked up at the dark cloudy sky before shaking his head - "I better put those thoughts aside, I don't need to have any more distractions, not when they can be fatal."
Soma resumed his journey to where the other soldiers were with a stoic expression on his face. He was walking with the conviction that this would be his last day, after all, there was no favoritism in the world and anyone could be the next to die.
