Chapter 624 ( The Man in the Middle of the Desert - II )

"I see" - muttered the strange young man - "Thank you very much for saving me, if it wasn't for you, it is possible that I would have died and I would not have been able to save my people."

"Come to think of it, why were you in the middle of the desert and unprepared?" - Yue asked with a frown.

"As I said before, I was trying to save my people" - replied the young man as he sighed regretfully - "You see, my name is Bize Feuward Zengen."

"Zengen, are you the son of the Duke of Ankaji, Lord Lanzwi?" - Cloud asked as he raised an eyebrow.

"Yes" - nodded Bize as he sighed regretfully - "Anyway, for you to be in such a dangerous place, means you are adventurers, and very experienced ones, I would like to know what rank you are"

"We are Gold rank" - Cloud answered honestly.

"Gold!" - Bize exclaimed in surprise, only to feel like a miracle had finally appeared - "Thank the gods for helping me! I need you to do me a favor!"

"Does it have to do with that strange magical poisoning?" - Tio asked as she raised an eyebrow.

"Now that you mention it, I also felt that there was something strange about him when I was healing him" - Kaori said with a frown - "His mana was being activated unconsciously and it was putting enormous pressure on his body, making him barely able to resist. If we hadn't arrived in time, it's quite possible that he would have exploded from the magical overload on his body!"

"Wait, magical overload?!" - Bize exclaimed in surprise - "It's not a disease?"

"Well, it's some sort of mana poisoning" - replied Tio as she frowned - "Basically, someone poisoned them with a potent magical toxin that in small doses would only make their magical control minor, but in large doses can become deadly."

Bize was silent when he heard this as he felt it all make sense.

"Do you think you can give us any more information?" - Tio asked as she raised an eyebrow - "Maybe then we can help you."

"Really!" - Bize exclaimed with surprise and excitement - "Thank you so much!"

"Just talk" - said Cloud as he shook his head.

"Ok" - nodded Bozes as he explained how four days ago, strange occurrences had started to appear in Ankaji, occurrences that both he, and his father, had ignored because honestly it was nothing serious, just a heat stroke, something normal in the middle of the desert.

"Were they that unconcerned?" - Kaori asked with a frown.

"Yes, it was a mistake that soon cost us dearly" - answered Bize as he sighed with regret - "After seeing more and more people entering our medical sites, we decided to investigate the situation, and we got the terrible surprise that more than 3,000 people had been infected with this strange virus."

Bize continued with his story as Kaori let out a sigh of surprise and regret when she heard how those affected continued to increase, to the point that they overwhelmed the medical system there.

"Soon, our healers began to feel symptoms of this disease, and now our territory is on the verge of collapse" - Bize muttered as he gritted his teeth - "Maybe nothing would have changed if we had done something from the beginning, but now it's a regret I have that possibly won't go away until I manage to find the cure."

"I feel like there's something more to all of this" - Cloud said as he watched everyone start to get into their vehicle.

"Yes, our top experts tried to check our food, but they found nothing, so they quickly dismissed the poisoning option, at least until one of them decided to investigate our oasis" - Bize replied as he frowned - "He found a strange substance in the water."

"Well, that confirms the magical poisoning, whoever was responsible, wanted to see them die in the slowest and most painful way possible" - said Tio while crossing her arms.

"I think the same, and honestly, I have a possible culprit in mind" - Cloud added with disdain.

"And I think we're thinking of the same person" - smiled Tio as the two dragons nodded.

"Leaving that aside, this still doesn't explain why you were in the middle of the desert" - Cloud said as he turned his attention back to the young nobleman.

"It's because we managed to find a cure for this virus, and it's a rare mineral that can only be obtained in the vicinity of the great volcano" - answered Bize seriously - "I was heading to try to get some so I could save my father and make sure our experts were safe to continue investigating the problem"

"I see" - Cloud murmured as he nodded - "I guess we know what to do now"

"Yes, but first we have to make sure we give them a water source that is not infected, at least this way they can pass the symptoms of dehydration from the desert heat" - said Yue while looking at the blond.

"We tried to ask the kingdom for water, but they told us that they won't be able to help us for another two or three weeks, and by that time our whole territory will have died from this damn virus" - said Bize while gritting his teeth furiously.

"Relax, we can solve this very easily, I just need a little help from Cloud" - said Yue while looking at her husband - "Right?"

"That's right" - nodded Cloud calmly.

"Really?" - Bize was a little reluctant to believe the adventurers' words, but honestly it wasn't as if he could do anything else, not to mention that they were the only people who had offered to help them through this cruel situation.

"Yeah, we'll have to approach Ankaji though" - Cloud said calmly - "Anyway, we'd better not waste any time, so I'm going to recommend you to fasten your seatbelts."

"Belts?" - Bize repeated as he watched everyone present use the strange restraints in order to fasten themselves to the vehicle. He quickly mimicked their actions in a slightly awkward manner, before letting out a loud cry of surprise as he felt the vehicle increase in speed to the point where it looked like it was flying - "Ah!"

* * *

Fifteen minutes later, the group had reached the outskirts of the desert city.

The girls were getting out of the vehicle while Bize was holding on to the car seat as if her life depended on it.

"I think the trip was too much for our guest" - said Cloud as he raised an eyebrow - "Anyway, we'd better get to work."

"Ok" - nodded Yue as she walked in the opposite direction of the desert city - "Hmm, I think this is a safe distance"

"Yeah" - nodded Cloud as he walked to the girl because he knew that this would consume much of his mana, and the only quick way he could get it back, would be by consuming her blood.

Yue quickly punched a huge hole in the ground before falling to her knees.

Cloud grabbed her before she could touch the ground, and let her bite his neck.

"L-Lascivious!" - Myu exclaimed as she covered her eyes, though everyone could see how she was seeing through his fingers.

Tio stood watching silently with a slight blush while Kaori and Shizuku just watched with slight jealousy. The only one who was business as usual was Shea, who honestly couldn't care less about this, after all, she had seen and been a participant in much more heated situations.

"Thank you, this is more than enough" - Yue said as she separated from the blond and cast a powerful water spell that filled the hole she had made earlier.

Cloud had strengthened the hole with his magic to prevent it from creating mud, after all, that would have been counterproductive to his actions.

"There, job done, we've created a stable water source to keep the inhabitants of Ankaji hydrated" - Cloud said as he nodded calmly - "Now all that remains is to see the current state of the patients."

"I'll take care of that" - Kaori replied firmly.

"Don't worry, I can use recuperative magic too, though not as well as you" - Cloud said calmly - "I may not be able to cure them completely, but at least I'll be able to make your job a little easier"

"Working together as a pair!" - Kaori exclaimed excitedly.

"No, working together as colleagues" - replied Yue with disdain.

"Couple!" - Kaori exclaimed.

"Colleagues!" - Yue repeated.

"I think those two are getting along better and better" - said Shizuku sarcastically.

Cloud could only hold the bridge of his nose as he watched the two girls again start fighting, though if he was honest, he was at least happy that it was just words.

"Huh? Where did this oasis come from?" - Bize asked, confused with the overall situation - "And when did we get to Ankaji?"

"We arrived a few minutes ago, and this is an artificial oasis that was created by Yue-san's magic" - Tio answered while trying to explain the situation a bit.

Bize was silent for a few seconds as he nodded, though inside he was extremely grateful to have met these strange adventurers who had managed to solve one of the biggest problems that plagued his people.

"Now, please lead us to the medical site" - Cloud said as he watched the young nobleman nod firmly.

"Please follow me" - said Bize as he walked inside the city.
