Chapter 625 ( The Man in the Middle of the Desert - III )

When they arrived at the place, Kaori was shocked with all the people lying on the stretchers, each of them had an expression of absolute pain, as if they were constantly being burned from their insides.

"This is horrible" - Kaori muttered as a small tear ran down her cheeks as she saw how in the farthest place, there was a group of children begging for help and calling for their mothers - "Who could do something as cruel as this?"

"I have a few candidates, but my bet would go straight to the demons" - Cloud replied with a frown - "But let's better put that aside and concentrate on helping the people."

"Ok" - nodded Kaori as she watched Cloud walk towards the center of the place, only to widen her eyes in surprise when she saw the blond release a blinding golden light that invaded the place - "No enchantment?!"

"When you're a monster, you don't need those things" - Yue replied disdainfully - "Right?"

"I never needed to say incantations" - Tio replied as she shrugged her shoulders.

"Strengthening magic doesn't need incantation" - Shea added while stroking Myu's hair.

"Myu doesn't know how to use magic ~!" - Myu exclaimed with an innocent smile.

Kaori gave them a strange look because she didn't expect this.

"[Heal Wave]" - Cloud said as people's bodies glowed for a few seconds - "There, this is all I can do, my magic isn't a specialization, so I can't access the most powerful element spells."

"This is more than enough" - Kaori replied as she decided to ignore the fact that the blond hadn't cast an incantation to help her - "Go fix the water problem while I deal with this, thanks to Cloud's help, these people can hold out for at least a week if I help them a little more"

"Ok, you heard her" - Cloud said as he looked around - "Myu, I want you to stay here and protect Kaori."

"I'm not going with you?" - Myu asked with a frown as a melancholic aura, surrounded her body.

"I'm sorry, but where we're going, it's too dangerous, so we can't just go with us" - replied Cloud seriously - "Besides, we need you to protect Kaori, after all, you're a strong girl, right?"

"Yes I am strong!" - Myu exclaimed proudly - "I'm daddy's daughter!"

Cloud only smiled in response as he gave the little girl a small kiss on the forehead and left the place, but not before warning Bize that if anything happened to Myu, magical poisoning would be the least of his problems.

"So this is the poisoned lake" - Cloud said as he squinted his eyes.

"Hmm, yes you can feel the strange magical flow" - Tio added as she frowned - "But, I feel it's not just that."

"I can feel a faint fountain of life at the bottom of this lake" - Yue said as she started to think - "So maybe this is produced by a living creature, one that has a powerful ability to conceal its presence."

"I didn't detect anything" - muttered Tio while giving a glance to Cloud, who only shook her head.

"It's a vampire ability, we are susceptible to life sources thanks to our need to consume the mana of others through their blood" - replied Yue as she looked at Cloud - "That's why I can assure you that there's something alive down there"

"Ok, I trust you" - nodded Cloud as he looked around - "What do you guys think of the idea of going down and killing that thing?"

"We don't gain anything by doing so" - said Yue with a frown - "Jumping into the water doesn't assure us that we'll kill the one responsible for the virus."

"We also don't know if the poison will affect us if we come in contact with it for an extended time" - Tio added while shaking her head - "So I guess the safe plan will be to go look for those strange rocks that Bize said were in the big volcano."

"We still have to go to the volcano, so we kill two birds with one stone" - said Shea, who honestly didn't understand very much what they were talking about, but he knew what they had to do after they came to the conclusion.

"I guess we'll have to make things quick" - nodded Cloud as he took a last look at the lake and they prepared to go to the volcano, but not before informing Kaori and Myu where they would be going.

"What do you want me to do?" - Shizuku, who had been working as Kaori's bodyguard until now, asked.

"You can decide that yourself," Cloud replied calmly.

Shizuku was silent for a few seconds before looking at her friend.

"Go, I can't have you guarding me all your life" - replied Kaori with a smile.

"Ok" - nodded Shizuku as she looked at her friend, then looked at the blond - "I'll go with you".

"It's settled" - nodded Cloud as he said goodbye to Kaori and Myu.

The group quickly left the city and boarded the vehicle on their way to their destination, the great volcano.

"See, I told you that would happen."

"Keep quiet" - Kouki muttered as he frowned. Even though it was helpful, he was beginning to find the constant chatter of the voice in his head annoying.

"Seriously, you're an ingrate, I've helped you more than the weaklings you called comrades, and you repay me by insulting me..."

"We both know you just want to have fun watching me live" - Kouki replied disdainfully.

"True, your life is fun, especially watching you fall deeper and deeper into an abyss of despair."

"That aside, you still won't tell me who you are" - Kouki said while ignoring the words of the mysterious voice in his head.

"Knowing who I am, is not going to solve your situation, neither will it help you to fulfill your desires, the only thing you need to know about me, is that I can give you anything you want, as long as you follow my instructions."

Kouki was silent for a few seconds before nodding.

"Good, now keep walking, soon you'll find a small forest, in the middle of it, you'll find your first test, I hope you can pass it, hero."

Kouki just kept silent as he walked towards his destination, not noticing how a group of shadows were watching him from between the trees.

The boy was so preoccupied in his own affairs that he didn't notice how the atmosphere of the forest was getting more and more sinister the closer he got to the center.

"Stop!" - A male voice exclaimed.

Kouki stopped and looked towards the source of the voice, noticing how without realizing it, he had been surrounded by a group of hooded strangers - "What do you wish?"

"You cannot continue advancing" - said the one who seemed to be the leader of the group - "You are about to enter a forbidden place."

"I don't care, someone told me that what I was looking for, was in this place" - replied Kouki with a frown.

"No, what's ahead is something dangerous and we can't let anyone get close" - replied the leader of the group as the other hooded men prepared to draw their bows.

Kouki frowned as he looked towards the place where his test was supposed to be, then looked at the people who had surrounded him.

"Again, I ask you to go back the way you came, what lies ahead is something that must not be shown to the world" - said the leader of the group.

"I'm sorry, but there's no way I'm going back empty-handed" - Kouki replied as he took his dark sword and prepared to defend himself.

"Why don't you humans understand things with words?" - muttered the leader of the group as he sighed regretfully and ordered the attack.

Kouki quickly used his light magic to create a powerful glow that baffled the attackers for a few seconds, before lunging at those closest to him.

"Use your senses and mana so you can discover the transgressor's location!" - The leader exclaimed in fury upon hearing the shouts of his subordinates.

Kouki quickly jumped back when he noticed how the other attackers seemed to have detected his presence, only to frown because the adaptability of his opponents was extremely high.

"You're going to pay for killing my subordinates, transgressor" - said the leader of the group as he walked to Kouki with a pair of swords in his hands - "I knew humans were creatures that only sought to satisfy their own needs, but I never thought they were worse than animals, I guess our ancestors were right to stay away from such disgusting creatures as you."

Kouki didn't respond, he just stood his ground as he watched the leader of the group approach him.

"I recommend you say your last words, transgressor" - said the leader of the attackers.

"My last words are, you could have minded your own business, but you had to come to bother me" - said Kouki as he let the dark seed inside him, start to sink him deeper and deeper into a dark abyss - "Now die".
