Chapter 9

Chapter 9

As soon as the car stopped, I went out without even saying a single word.

Upon opening the door, I can see mom sitting on the sofa. The smell of the lemon pie embraces me as I close the door.

"Hi mom," I greeted her. My senses were back to normal, I was the same Sam again.

"You are one minute late Sam," mom reminded.

"It's exactly six and it's not that big deal mom."

"I said before six and it's a big deal to me," mom yelled as I climb upstairs.

I ignored her and went to my room to change my clothes. My naked body trembles as the wind from my open window brushed my skin. It was the same feeling of a while ago as the scene flashback.

"I am into you, Samantha."

I shook my head three times and went back to putting on my sleeves. Suddenly, a text message hit me on the bed.

It was from a new number.

-Look at the street lights, it makes the road beautiful, isn't it?-

I rushed my feet as it drags heavier just to look by the window. As I look down, a man was standing by the roadside exactly beside on post light.

"Daddy," I smiled as I wipe my teardrops trying to fall. Then he walked away as I hear mom calling me for dinner.

So I run downstairs to join mom at the table.

"So?" I haven't even seated when she begins to brag about my day.

"So what?" I pretend to not know what's the next line to say. Like this is always the thing on dinner. And I don't want to talk about what happened today.

"Did you know --?"

She haven't even finished when I interrupted. "No, I don't know," I answered in a flash.

"Sam!" My mom shouted in annoyance.

I zipped my mouth. Won't know what's gonna happen next if I'll continue to tease her. Might not share that lemon pie with me.

"So where was I?" Now she is lost on what she was about to say. "Uhmm yeah. I bumped into Khai-"

"Khai." We both said at the same time.

Looking shocked. "You knew?" Mom asked.

"Correction. I saw!" I said as I picked up the pasta from the bowl.

"So was that the reason why you were not coming when I called?"

I rolled my eyes. "Why are you talking to him anyway?" I asked.

"Well, he started it. He talks so sweet. He approached me first and besides, we knew each other so there's no problem of talking to each other. And yeah just my opinion, he looks more attractive than Norton. I think he is my new favorite now." She smiles weirdly.

"Mom! Eww! You probably didn't know but that guy is a crazy person, a flirt, and what do we know about him probably a womanizer! Behave yourself," I yelled as I put a spoonful into my mouth.

"What happened to you? You look like a roaring lion. Khai and I just had a chitchat and Nick told me he was a good guy. And I'm pretty sure he is."

"That's because Uncle Nick does not know him that well," I answered in assurance.

Mom dropped her spoon and gave me a suspicious look. "And what made you think you know him that well?" she asked that made me shut for a little time.

Can you believe that? Never did I know that Khai was also a manipulator. He had probably said something to mom that made her act this way.

"Normal, we are classmates, and uh- we are close friends," I felt cool by saying that. I hope she'd just believes it.

"Friends?" Now she is starting to contradict it again. "If you are friends then why do you hate him this much? You are even talking bad at his back."

I can't believe I am arguing my mom over this guy.

I took a deep breath. "This pie is great mom. You cooked it perfect," I tried to compliment her just to get away from this shit topic. I don't like talking about that idiot.

"Oh thank you. But getting back. Khai is really great actually. You might have not met that side of him yet." Now she is turning the table.

Why does this woman really like to believe that guy? "He is bad. Okay. Period." I still argue.

Mom is in confusion while eating her vegetables. "I don't get it. Did something bad happen between the two of you?" Mom then asked.

"Nothing. I just don't like him," I finally said honestly.

"Now I get it. You just don't like him." Mom smiled and nodded a couple of times while chewing.

"Yeah, that's because he is crazy. Period," I ended the fight pushing my opinion on the line.

Mom popped her open palm. "Let's get over it. He is bad. I just find him attractive. Over!"

I also popped my hand. Correct me if I'm wrong, I think my mom is in love with Khai. Krazy mama! And talking about in love. The scene flashback again.

"Mom, can I ask you a question?" I tried to make the dinner live again.

"Go ahead sweetheart, shoot!"

"How did you meet dad?"

She glared at me. Scary. I think I surprised her with that question she never knew it was coming. This is my first time to ask something about love and it is about them.

"Why'd you ask that?" she asked putting her attention back on the plate.

"I just wanna know."

"I don't want to bring it up but since you asked. Why not? You need to know everything anyway." Mom said in a forced happy mood.

I really want to hear both sides to understand what happened between them. If I can get a clue, there might be a chance to bring them back.

Sarah Jacobs

It all started one Sunday morning at Florida Bay. I was taking picture of my best friend Stella when we took our vacation last May 2004. Suddenly, a guy approached with a scrunchie hanging on his fingers.

He was a tall good looking gentleman with a necklace that first caught my attention. It was my favorite stone, tourmaline. I had not even noticed the scrunchie on his hand.

We giggled as he tries to get our attention. But then we thought he was one crazy man so we ignored him until he called me.

"Hey, mizz! I got your scrunchie over here," he said smiling while his other hand was pocketed. He looks so attractively cool.

Now, I knew he has something that belonged to me and I had to get it.

"Oh shit yeah, that was your tie." I could not believe that even Stella had not noticed it.

We both laughed at ourselves. I managed to get it and get a closer look at your dad. I could not deny that I was crazily in love at first sight.

The second time we met was at Kingston when I finally got my diploma. He suddenly appeared in one of my photos. He was sitting at the bench. His features had changed but it was the necklace that brought my memory.

At this time, it was me who approached him.

"Hey!" I swallowed my pride just to greet him hey.

And yeah, I never knew at the one glance he immediately remembered me.

I laughed when he greeted me back. "Hey, scrunchie girl." With a matching wink.

I never understand your father sometimes.

We talked for a while and got to know each other. Then after that, we agreed to go out on Friday. We only agreed to go out for a day walk but then it turned out as a date when he said at the end of the day. "I would like to enjoy a second date with you again."

It was the same that I felt like a date. So we agreed on a second date and a third date and so on till we could say it was history.

My favorite part was at the Moonlight Shop. I was drinking a coffee and he kept on smiling at me. It made me feel weird but I still could not get it. Until our cake finally arrived written, Will You Marry Me.

I cried, of course, I even hugged him as I wait for the ring but then he was not bringing it out.

I was annoyed when he said laughing. "Drink up your coffee first."

Up until I finished my cup, there I found my ring. Luckily I did not swallow it.

"The ring should've come first before the cake," your father corrected the order that the waiter had made a mistake. No wonder why he keeps on laughing.

We then planned and ready everything before the great day at Montreal where we joined hands and promised it all to the Almighty.

After a year, you came to the world. It was our happiest day of lifetime.

Until your father screwed another woman.

The end-

What?

"Mom?" I pleaded her to give a better continuation of their love story but she refused to.

"I don't want you to bear the hurt Sam. At least you heard 90 percent of the story." Mom said and held my hand. "Now fix the table because I am sleepy."

"Mama!" Ugh!

I smiled as I dispose the leftovers. They started too good and ended too bad. Guess that's how love works for them and hope it's not for me.

Hmmh. Crazy Love!

As I finished fixing everything, I went upstairs to my room as I walked past mom's. I went back again as I could not believe my ears.

I am pretty sure I heard her sobbed. Wait what?

I lend my ears right to the door. Pretty sure she really is crying.

I knocked on the door and as I stepped in, she was sitting by her bed crying. Their wedding picture is on the it while my mom cries nonstop.

I hugged her right giving her the comfort that she needs. I guess I shouldn't have let her share the story.

I rubbed her back while I hear her say. "I missed your father."
