"What do you mean?" asked Rudsis, and his hand moved to the scabbard of the sword hanging by his hip.
Afena turned her head slowly, and slightly, to a side, almost as a challenge, daring him to draw the sword, and said, "Do as you will, Rudsis. I came here to kill a goddess that thinks as much of you as she does of insects. If you're not going to be rid of her, then on your head be it."
"You can't go, witch. You have to help me keep an eye on her."
"I have to do nothing I don't please. This is your decision, Rudsis. Not mine."
"Your king has ordered you to stay," Treni said on her knees still.
"A king is only king if recognized by others," Afena said seriously, with a voice devoid of all sentiment so Rudis could not take her words as mocking ones. "Before me I see neither king, nor goddess. All I see is selfish wretches."
"Witch, this is the best outcome. Why would you quit after everything we've been through?"
