Chapter 26: Who Are You?

The stairs were cut directly from stone, and spiraled downwards into the earth. Cassandra had her hands on the walls of the tunneling stairs to keep her balance. No surprise, it was extremely dark and she needed to rely mainly on her instincts to know she wouldn’t fall. The hound was under foot, but oddly comforting. She was sure glad she was not doing this alone.

Finally, they came to the end of the spiraling steps and entered a dimly lit, foggy room. There was a fire smoldering in the center of the room and roaches lining the walls. It felt like a comfortable cavern, with the crackling of the fires mingling magically with the trickling of the water on the walls. It seemed to echo its own silence in such a way that made her feel like she was nothing at all.
