Responsibility

"You said you wanted to tell us something about the money we give you," I said.

Mom and Dad glanced at each other.

"Yes," replied Dad. "Business has been going well lately and some of our investments are paying off, meaning you can give us less money."

"Oh, that's good."

Mom nodded. "The store is self-sustaining now, but we still need a bit of help to pay the medical expenses."

"Sure," I replied. "He hasn't improved, has he?"

Dad answered, "No, the doctors still don't have much hope."

I lowered my head. "Are you sure lawyers can't do anything?"

"We are sure," Mom answered. "Even if they could, we'd still help him."

"But it wasn't your fault."

"It was our responsibility, and we will take it."
