Chapter 32: Healing

For most of the walk through the forest, Adelaide kept her distance and focused solely on their surroundings to ensure that no members of the Ascenders had the same ideas as Eli. The sunlight didn’t appear that day and in its place were clouds that were as separated as he and Adelaide had been. How fitting.

Keeping one hand on his side, Damon used the other to grab a hold of a tree every now and then for additional support. Adelaide pushed aside dangling leaves from branches as they walked through, holding them open long enough for Damon to grab a hold of them before they shattered shut again. At least she still cared if he got smacked in the eye by a twig—the last thing he needed right now was a third injury.

Damon took a step over the uneven plains, watching each move he made as to not trip. His head was starting to get woozy from all of the walking, and regardless of the grey clouds hidden behind the treetops, he found himself sweating profusely.
