Chapter 38: I Don't Need Saving

Damon couldn’t believe what he was seeing—he had finally found her, and she was more than okay; she had saved his life. He released his muscles and stood up straight, staring at her in disbelief before transforming back into his human form.

She stared back at him, her eyes uncompromising and stern, while she stood tall, breathing heavily.

“Adelaide…” Damon said, astonished at her sudden appearance. “How—?”

“Word of advice,” she answered, letting her hands drop from their throwing position. “You probably shouldn’t chase down things that look more powerful than you.”

“That stick—”

Adelaide stepped out of the bushes and down onto the trail. “I had to improvise,” she stated. “Once I was on my own. I don’t carry daggers around with me everywhere.”

Damon’s gaze fell to his feet. He had been planning for days what he would say to her when he did find her, and now that she was here, he was utterly silent. She cleared her throat and moved past him, walking further into the woods.
