Chapter 43: Sound the Alarm

Damon awoke the following morning to the blissful sound of snoring beside him as daylight broke through the open window. He stretched his body and turned onto his side, careful not to move the arm that was being used as a pillow for Adelaide’s head. He smiled as he watched her sleep peacefully and stretched his free hand out to tuck a piece of hair behind her ear.

He wished more than anything that this time would last forever; that they could just stay in this bed and avoid all upcoming responsibility. Let the war be someone else’s problem. But it wasn’t and never could be, and he had to accept that depending on his performance and how the battle went, it could very well be the only time they were ever like this again.

Damon leaned inwards and placed a kiss on Adelaide’s forehead. He slowly moved his arm from underneath her head; however, when it touched the pillowcase, Adelaide’s eyes flickered open.

“Sh*t,” Damon sighed. “I’m sorry. Go back to sleep.”
