Chapter 106

Sir Yoshime brought Gus in to the doctor's office much earlier than I had anticipated. Rather than the blood and bruises I had expected from a hard fight, Gus came in leaning heavily on his teacher with one leg completely out of commission.

"He ignored my warnings and pushed himself farther than the daily requirement of exercises," said the knight, his accented words wry.

I gave Gus my best flat look. Of course he didn't meet it.

"Let me guess. Tore a ligament?"

"Wouldn't have bothered to bring him in otherwise. Getting wounds and healing them make the body stronger, unless--"

"Unless it's a ligament." Stupid things just got weaker every time you injured them. Had to do with their properties of being the connective tissue to the body and getting poor circulation. They also took much longer to heal than bones or muscle, which meant Gus would fall farther behind than he already was in a class of boys that had at least a few more years of training on top of him.
