An unfamiliar dragon, with black twisting horns arching off its head, flew over the encampment only to bank to come back around. Aside from its green tinged bronze scales and tan hide wings, it was much thornier than Moonfall, with horns and spikes speckling its face, joints, and tail.
I only had time for a sharp inhale before Hal's thick hands grabbed the back of Milly's and my neck and shoved us down into the water. For a brief, bewildering fraction of a second I wondered why on earth Hal was trying to drown us. But logic kicked in as he dropped to his belly in the stream as well to put an arm over each of us. The faint bubbling of his water magic tickled through my clothes.
A whistling crackle whished through the air. I smelled fire. Horses screamed. Women shrieked. Men shouted.
I struggled to sit up, thoughts of going and helping starting in my mind, but Hal's thick arm pushed me back down into the shallow stream
"Stay," he growled.
