Chapter 23: They Weren't Hunting Animals

Brooke huddled in the corner of the bathroom as she listened to the onslaught of bullets hitting the cabin. She kicked herself for leaping across the bed to shield herself without getting her phone from the opposite side table. Her skin felt as if it were pulled tight over her entire body, goose pimpling in every direction as the barrage went on until she heard a final crack and thud before all went silent. The silence around her became deafening as she could hear the rushing of her own blood pressure in her ears.
