Chapter 36: It’s Friday Night

It took Nathan a few hours to shake the sinking mood he’d been in since Brooke’s refusal to do the three nights. He made himself focus on the work in front of him, demolishing her kitchen to replace it with new floors, sink, cabinets, and counter tops. They’d gotten to putting in the floor before sunset and Beau Davis called quitting time.

“It’s Friday night, we’ll be barbecuing again. You and Ms. Morgan are welcome to join us.”

“I’ll let her know,” Nathan told him before he packed his tools on the back of his truck and drove to his place. He felt slightly embarrassed about giving her the cold shoulder before leaving and hoped she wouldn’t hold it against him. He did miss her and wanted her to know that he understood her refusal. He stepped into his house to find her in the living room chatting excitedly with her aunt.

“Hey ladies,” he greeted cautiously and looked to Brooke to gauge how she felt about him in that moment.
