Chapter 27

Inside the police station Crystal sat on the wooden bench, waiting. After Kade's call, dread made her stomach clench. She didn't like having to lie to Kade, but she couldn't abandon her dad and let Westridge get away with framing him for their crimes.

Beside her sat a woman with smeared lipstick on her face. Her blond wig was lopsided as she smoothed a curl down with her cuffed hands. She smelled of hairspray and pineapple.

"Crystal?" a policewoman called out from behind a desk.

"That's me." She leapt to her feet. Phones rang, creating an inharmonious symphony.

Since the woman didn't glance up, Crystal strode forward.

"In there." The woman pointed to a doorway. "Officer Jenkins will escort you to the questioning room."

My, Kade is formal about this. So that's how he was going to play this game. Why would he ask her to come to the police station for questioning rather than someone else? Being a police officer's cousin couldn't have that many privileges, could it?
