Ashley woke up on the third day. Her eyes were full of white as soon as she woke up. The tickling sound of the instrument stimulated her ears. She slowly opened her eyes and was not used to the light in the ward.
"Ashley!" Seeing her reaction, Lucas grabbed her hand and pressed the bell at the bedside. Soon the doctor came.
Before she came back to her senses, she heard people talking about her, such as the car accident, the injury, and the blood transfusion.
Her head ached, and her memory gradually returned to her mind. She raised her hand, and her voice was hoarse and low.
"Lucas..."
The doctor was still talking to him, "Mrs. Lucas has woken up, so she should be fine. After she recovers, we will give her a check-up. Don't worry about anything else."
"Okay, thank you, doctor."
A doctor opened her eyes and shone them with a small flashlight. Ashley felt a sharp pain in her eyes and dodged.
"Mrs. Lucas, how are you feeling now?" The doctor asked gently.
Ashley could speak, but her throat was dry. "I want water. Water..."
Lucas heard this, poured her a glass of warm water, and fed her mouth carefully.
"Mrs. Lucas has just woken up. She can't eat too much. Mr. Lucas, you need to take care of her carefully."
"I will."
Ashley finally felt better after drinking some water. The doctor asked her a few questions and then went out. There were only them in the room.
Lucas held her in his arms, choked, and said guiltily, "I'm sorry. I didn't protect you well. I promise it won't happen again."
Before the car accident, she didn't sleep well because of Lucas and Emma. But when she opened her eyes just now, she saw his red eyes with bloodshot and the pale face. It seemed that he had been staying here with her these days. She suddenly felt relieved.
Who hasn't the past? Since he can accept her past, she should also accept his past.
She slowly raised her hand and hugged him back. She smiled weakly.
"It's okay. I'm fine."
"Yes, everything is fine. You and the baby are fine."
Hearing that the baby was fine, Ashley felt better. Her eyes were sore and wanted to cry, but when she thought of the car accident, she couldn't help but let go of him.
"By the way, the car accident... Who is it?"
Lucas grabbed her arm tightly. His eyebrows furrowed, his jaw moved, and his face twitched.
"What's wrong?"
She became nervous and realized that something must be complicated. But after she asked, Lucas didn't say anything. She asked again.
"Lucas, why don't you tell me? Is it... Premeditated?"
She had never been afraid of guessing others with the worst malice. That day, the accident came so suddenly that she did not come to her sense until she was in the hospital. Fortunately, she survived.
He took a deep breath and shook his head. "No, it was just an accident. But the driver who hit you was the driver of the Johnson family. He was in a hurry to send documents to the company that day and ran a red light to hit you..."
He finished his words, but Ashley thought he didn't tell her anything. When he was about to say something, there was a knock on the door.
He frowned and looked out. It was old Mrs. Johnson followed by a man and a woman. If he didn't think wrong, they should be her son and daughter-in-law, Ashley's biological parents.
He didn't look well. Ashley followed his gaze and saw a few strangers. Then she looked at Lucas and asked him what was going on with her eyes.
Old Mrs. Johnson came in and held Ashley's hand intimately with a kind look.
"Poor girl, you finally wake up. I'm so worried about you. I'm sorry. The driver has been fired by the Johnson family. Please get better and go home with grandma and your parents."
Ashley pinched himself across the quilt with the other hand. It was not a dream.
Her throat moved, didn't understand what was going on. She indifferently pulled her hand out of Mrs. Johnson's hand.
"Sorry, I... I don't seem to know you, do I?"
Ashley tried her best to control her emotions and stepped back. Seeing this, Lucas protected her.
"Mrs. Johnson, you can go out first. I will make it clear to her. Ashley just woke up. You will frighten her like this."
Lucas's face darkened. He was annoyed by the Johnson family's behavior. Ashley had just woken up and needed some quiet time, but they seemed to be eager to stimulate her.
When Ashley's parents left the ward, they turned around and gave a deep look at Ashley before they went out.
"They look so alike. Mom, Ashley, and her mother look so alike." Ashley's father said with self-mockery and looking at his wife. But her wife seemed to be lost in thought and did not react.
In the ward, Lucas tucked her in and got her a glass of warm water.
"Drink some water first. I'll talk to you later."
After taking a sip, she looked out of the window and saw the back of the Johnson family. She pursed her lips and her hand was held by Lucas.
"Ashley, no matter who you are, you won't change for me."
During the two days when she was in a coma, he had figured out many things. He didn't need to doubt her because of something impossible that others said. It will be enough as long as she stayed with him well.
"Lucas, you said it was the driver of the Johnson family who hit me. They..."
"After the car accident, you need surgery and blood transfusion urgently. The blood bank is not enough. Old Mrs. Johnson donated to you. After inspection, you were the lost daughter of the Johnson family more than 20 years ago."
His words were brief and to the point, Ashley heard it. She found her biological parents because of a car accident.
She sneered at herself. So many years had passed, she had long thought that she had no parents. For the sudden appearance of the Johnson family, her feelings were not deep or even passionless, but... There were some things they owed her.
"I see." Ashley took a deep breath and said to Lucas, "Let them in."
"Okay, I'll buy you some food. Martin is waiting outside. If you need anything, just let him know."
He wanted to give her some time to chat with the Johnson family, but he was afraid that something unexpected would happen at the same time, so he said so.
She nodded and let go of his hand. "Yes, I will."
He turned to look back repeatedly at every step to make sure that she was in a stable mood before letting the Johnson family in.
Old Mrs. Johnson was still the first one, but her excessive enthusiasm was in sharp contrast to the excessive coldness of Ashley's parents, which made her feel that there was something wrong.
