Chapter 70: Phone Call

Rowan stared at the phone like it was a snake, coiled and ready to bite her. She didn’t want to touch it. She was frozen in her spot as she stared at the ringing phone. It couldn’t be Mateo. It just couldn’t be. He had no idea where she was, right? No one knew where she was except for Gordy. Gordy had promised he wouldn’t tell a soul.

Unless Mateo had gotten to him. She had no doubt that Mateo knew ways of getting information out of someone should he want to. Is that what happened? Rowan thought in terror. Did Mateo get to Gordy and force the kind, old cook to tell him where Rowan was?

Rowan choked back a sob and slowly started to reach for the phone. She didn’t want to know, but she also had to know if she needed to leave now.

Right before she touched it, the phone stopped ringing. Rowan shook as she waited for it to ring again the way it did last time that Mateo called to her.
